Actually, PoMo anthropologists do make some really good points that all anthropologists would be wise to acknowledge and work with in their research. We all have biases and we should be more transparent about it. Plus, there are many things I will never understand about the communities I work with because I didn't grow up as a member - again, I need to acknowledge this in my research.

No seriously, that pins down something that's been floating around in my head but that I couldn't quite get a handle on, to describe how forums go to shit when they get too big to be a community and become just a crowd :/ Instead of a back and forth, the comments do become "fire and forget".

A friend also described it as "not even a conversation anymore, just a bunch of one-liners trying to outdo each other". That doesn't describe all the threads on places like digg or fark, but it does capture why a lot of them leave me feeling completely disinterested in participating, as compared to the sites where I do want to jump in after reading the forums.

At least not as bad as /b/. Anarchy makes for really shitty, dull reading, unless my glances at that site have been totally atypical of its glowing content.
