Man, that NPR article is a real eye-opener.

Here I was, thinking that the D-man was raking in literal millions from the thing, and it actually lost money last year.

As far as him distancing himself from the site is concerned, here's this from the NPR article (which is dated May 7, 2007, so fairly recent):

The book comes out at the end of this month. He hopes it will catapult him onto national talk shows, where he can brand himself and Fark.

"Now, I've got the license to contact Jay Leno or Fresh Air and raise the profile of the site and get advertisers to realize, 'Hey, we really need to advertise with this guy,'" he says.

...and...

Curtis is now 34. He says he'd like to do this for the rest of his life, but he knows it won't last.

So, he's looking ahead. He says if his book sells, he might try to build a new career as an author — shifting from the world's newest media to one of its oldest.

Now, granted, this interview was done only a week or so after the War of the Boobies and the subsequent Glorious People's Revolution that gave us our start here, and things may have changed since then - but people were speculating that he had sold the site well before May Day, as I recall.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. I wish him the best of luck, frankly - I've "gotten over it" when it comes to the web site, but he seems like a decent guy.

Well it dies in respect to how we would tend to use it and prefer it to be. Realistically it wont die as long as places like morning talk shows, radio jockies, and others use it as a weird and wacky news aggregate.

Of course if you alienate the main user base enough then the stories wont get submitted. keep in mind there are enough fan boys at this point to keep the stories coming in.

Indeed. I hold no grudges for Drew, just the people that currently run Fark... However, I do have to wonder what the hell is going on now and what it's going to take before the truth is finally out: When it was sold, who he sold it to, why moderation rule had gotten so abusive on the site, etc....

Assuming he did sell out, it's likely that the new buyers wanted to keep the feel of the site the same for a transitional period, and that the contract for the sale therefore included a clause saying he had to keep his mouth shut.

Similarly, Brad Fitz didn't make it a front page announcement when he sold LiveJournal and started having zero to do with its ongoing management or development.

Both. Like I said before, a profile that hadn't be touched in 3 years was shadowed after the deceit page went up.

Isn't it also possible that it has been submitted multiple time already so they created a filter for it?

Possible, but then I would have been unaware of attempts to submit the page to Fark.com, nor would I even suggest that was a good idea to begin with.

Is he the faux fur covered kind of mascot? Will we be able to buy cuddly Drews in stores? Enquiring minds want to know.

It will indeed be interesting to see how this proceeds.

TF has committed fraud in my eyes. That can be redressed by law.

I had peek in Factiva, which has the full text of the Lexington Herald-Leader, and this article was not there. Not saying it wasn't published, but it's not in the database

Ok, now I read the linky.

I hope he does go down in flames, for allowing his Mods to shadowban people (etc) all the while, taking their money and allowing them to think that they were part of the community when in reality, they were on the outside looking in.

And all of the other crapola that happened this past year.... he allowed it. If you own a site, you need to be responsible for what goes on there, and if people are complaining to you that it's being mismanaged, you damned well better get off your ass and fix the problems. Especially if you're ripping people off.

Drew what did I do to you, man?

Why did Leah, Kari, Su Anna, and Art et al and their fanboys harass and stalk me and my youngest niece?

What did I do that was so wrong, sir?

Comments I made at TF were thrown in my face at Fark lite. How did that happen without violating your commenting guidelines.

I joined TF in Feb2002 right? I sponsored my first liter in June2002 didn't I or I'm lying right?

I tipped you over $200. I never complained or asked for a refund when I sponsored someone who had already been sponsored. I never asked for special favors like naskar, jj money and other mooches.

In two years, I hope g DOES sell this for $250k or something.
Then we can all migrate to supergr0ver.com for two years and then to faethe.com for two years and then bNbrazil.com for two years... etc.

Long enough to garner enough users to pull a good price and then sneak off to the next site.
