It would basically be the first printed, sourced proof that Drew has indeed sold the site out. That's the biggest thing, in my eyes. Why hide that fact until you get sued?

Man, that NPR article is a real eye-opener.

Here I was, thinking that the D-man was raking in literal millions from the thing, and it actually lost money last year.

As far as him distancing himself from the site is concerned, here's this from the NPR article (which is dated May 7, 2007, so fairly recent):

The book comes out at the end of this month. He hopes it will catapult him onto national talk shows, where he can brand himself and Fark.

"Now, I've got the license to contact Jay Leno or Fresh Air and raise the profile of the site and get advertisers to realize, 'Hey, we really need to advertise with this guy,'" he says.

...and...

Curtis is now 34. He says he'd like to do this for the rest of his life, but he knows it won't last.

So, he's looking ahead. He says if his book sells, he might try to build a new career as an author ? shifting from the world's newest media to one of its oldest.

Now, granted, this interview was done only a week or so after the War of the Boobies and the subsequent Glorious People's Revolution that gave us our start here, and things may have changed since then - but people were speculating that he had sold the site well before May Day, as I recall.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. I wish him the best of luck, frankly - I've "gotten over it" when it comes to the web site, but he seems like a decent guy.

Well it dies in respect to how we would tend to use it and prefer it to be. Realistically it wont die as long as places like morning talk shows, radio jockies, and others use it as a weird and wacky news aggregate.

Of course if you alienate the main user base enough then the stories wont get submitted. keep in mind there are enough fan boys at this point to keep the stories coming in.

Assuming he did sell out, it's likely that the new buyers wanted to keep the feel of the site the same for a transitional period, and that the contract for the sale therefore included a clause saying he had to keep his mouth shut.

Similarly, Brad Fitz didn't make it a front page announcement when he sold LiveJournal and started having zero to do with its ongoing management or development.

ratfucker: It would basically be the first printed, sourced proof that Drew has indeed sold the site out. That's the biggest thing, in my eyes. Why hide that fact until you get sued?

Drew sold the site out... before he actually sold the site.

muninsfire: It's the sacred chao. Look up "Discordianism"

I see, what a crock of shit! And they should still learn to spell têi kallistêi...

strayling: Google for Illuminatus!

Short version: if you know the references it means you're a hippie.

Haha, that may be it :)

Thanks!

finnley wren: Good info, horn. Thanks!

Looking over the Quadrangle portfolio, there are all sorts of media holding companies, and such. Their news release page hasn't been updated in awhile, but they're in partnership with a lot of media companies.

FTFA (NPR): Fark has allowed Curtis' wife, Heather, to stay home with their young sons, Chance and Storm.

"Chance" and "Storm"? I LOL'd

You'd be surprised. On the surface it looks like a joke, sure....but there -is- a core in there.

She would be.

muninsfire: Ah, a gag clause. That'd make sense. Sticky...somewhat dishonest...but it makes sense.

Fark would probably die if Drew announced "Hey everyone, starting tomorrow things are going to get more strict around here so my new advertisers and owners won't leave. Oh, here's the new layout too." Fark needs to at least "feel" edgy to succeed, and as long as they don't do something really stupid they very likely will. Fark will be around for a long time.

\doesn't care either way
\\still some funny folks over there, and I got AdBlock

You win, but I sailed through school without a single snarky comment from the other kids about my name. They sure as hell won't!

I see what you did there. But I still maintain they're off to a really bad start with the piss-poor Greek.
