i read this, and wanted to say this was a great summation of the story. as soon as someone provides a scan or a link to the article, the more interesting it will get...
and i'm nt surprised pilto yawns, facts and well thought out arguments have never been his thing.

I dunno. It'd certainly be interesting if indeed he no longer owned TOS, wouldn't it?
Might help explain the unexplainable anyway.

i left fark cause it sucked. i would rather we forge our own identity, rather than being fark rejects.

It would basically be the first printed, sourced proof that Drew has indeed sold the site out. That's the biggest thing, in my eyes. Why hide that fact until you get sued?

I'm usually not very interested in fark threads anymore, but I quite agree on that point and voted this up as a result. That really is rather interesting to me.

Shenanigans.
That would explain the sellout, at least. Hopefully Drew is lurking around, planning the next website (or other means to take over the world).
Meh. I canceled my totalfark account when I got shadowbanned, disputed the last month's charge with my CC company and got my $5 back. Dunno if totalfark costs more now or not, I haven't really poked around on fark much since I got banned.
Well, it's certainly an interesting twist in the evolution of the New Media.

Far as I'm concerned, TOS is at this point a mainstream media site. As such, their rumored sale is fair game for discussion.
And I think we already have forged our own identity.

Well that would explain the dramatic shift in content and the ridiculous moderation decisions. It looks like the general opinion was true that Drew had sold out.

I just hope that this site doesn't go that direction. A little anarchy is a good thing.

There were rumors that AOL/TimeWarner was looking to buy Fark at one time. I don't know if they were tongue-in-cheek or actually serious. I kinda doubt it myself. Fark is small potatoes compared to AOL.

Man, that NPR article is a real eye-opener.
Here I was, thinking that the D-man was raking in literal millions from the thing, and it actually lost money last year.
As far as him distancing himself from the site is concerned, here's this from the NPR article (which is dated May 7, 2007, so fairly recent):
The book comes out at the end of this month. He hopes it will catapult him onto national talk shows, where he can brand himself and Fark.
"Now, I've got the license to contact Jay Leno or Fresh Air and raise the profile of the site and get advertisers to realize, 'Hey, we really need to advertise with this guy,'" he says.
...and...
Curtis is now 34. He says he'd like to do this for the rest of his life, but he knows it won't last.
So, he's looking ahead. He says if his book sells, he might try to build a new career as an author ? shifting from the world's newest media to one of its oldest.
Now, granted, this interview was done only a week or so after the War of the Boobies and the subsequent Glorious People's Revolution that gave us our start here, and things may have changed since then - but people were speculating that he had sold the site well before May Day, as I recall.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. I wish him the best of luck, frankly - I've "gotten over it" when it comes to the web site, but he seems like a decent guy.

Well it dies in respect to how we would tend to use it and prefer it to be. Realistically it wont die as long as places like morning talk shows, radio jockies, and others use it as a weird and wacky news aggregate.
Of course if you alienate the main user base enough then the stories wont get submitted. keep in mind there are enough fan boys at this point to keep the stories coming in.

Indeed. I hold no grudges for Drew, just the people that currently run Fark... However, I do have to wonder what the hell is going on now and what it's going to take before the truth is finally out: When it was sold, who he sold it to, why moderation rule had gotten so abusive on the site, etc....

Assuming he did sell out, it's likely that the new buyers wanted to keep the feel of the site the same for a transitional period, and that the contract for the sale therefore included a clause saying he had to keep his mouth shut.
Similarly, Brad Fitz didn't make it a front page announcement when he sold LiveJournal and started having zero to do with its ongoing management or development.

Fark would probably die if Drew announced "Hey everyone, starting tomorrow things are going to get more strict around here so my new advertisers and owners won't leave. Oh, here's the new layout too." Fark needs to at least "feel" edgy to succeed, and as long as they don't do something really stupid they very likely will. Fark will be around for a long time.
