It's a loaded question with biased issues thrown in.
Does anyone seriously doubt pollution is harmful? The impact can be debated. But, you can't throw the issue under the bus by saying it's a money grab.

So let's not pay attention to basic science anymore and just keep industrial society chugging along.

This whole eco bullshit is wrong from every angle it's presented at.
You shouldn't have to "sacrifice a convenient lifestyle to prevent global warming" as the article suggests, just as you should be fucking responsible with shitting up the environment.
It is possible for things to be convenient AND eco-friendly. What is wrong with people who think it's an either or concept?

Hell things can even be economical and eco-friendly. It doesn't have to cost more, although there's sometimes a longer recoup period

Don't conflate CO2 obsession with disregard for all pollution, mmkay?
Yes, pollution is bad. Some pollution is worse than others. And, frankly, I get just a tad bit suspicious when somebody claims that the US, which has ecoregions in recovery, is a worse polluter in absolute numbers than, say, China, which has a perpetual brown cloud over it and is actively in the process of killing off numerous ecoregions.
Do we have reason to cut down on CO2 pollution? Sure, several of them. But I wouldn't put it into the same category of "immediate drastic action required" as, say, massive heavy particulate smog thick enough to block sight of a significant fraction of the earth from space, or the massive leaching of heavy metals and agri-industrial pollutants in major water sources for significant fractions of the world population, or massive SO2 pollution bad enough to acidify the rain across Asia.

The problem is that science is still trying to figure out the relationship of correlation and causation when it comes to pollution and changes in our environment.

Just saw an interesting piece on, I think, the Dirty Jobs show (Discovery?) that had to do with programs designed to replenish the marshland of the Mississippi delta. Best one seemed to be a diversion project from the river that was flooding a whole shitload of land, hopefully dumping lots of helpful silt.

I'm not arguing with apocalypse scenarios, I was trying to give some perspective on how that original 'question' sounded.
Ya we should look for cleaner industry, and how do you do that? With funding for science and an open mind towards our impact on the environment. Suggesting critisms are a money-grab or are tax/politics induced is not cool.

I feel like heading out with a D-11 and dozing some wetlands and riparian habitat into some anadromous streams, then burning a million acres of forest in a national park!

How else can you get liquid out of a container? It's not like you can just turn those things over and have the stuff come out of them.

Not cool? I think it's just fine. Because people do use issues like this for less than genuine purposes at times.

Read it again, as you clearly missed the point the first time.
Looking up the concepts of triage and risk assessment might help, too.

When the government offers criticism, I'm going to smell a rat. This is the same government that lied about the effects of marijuana. This is the same government that lied about Saddam Hussein having WMDs. This is the same government that continues to lie about the progress of the Iraqi occupation and the threat posed by Al Qaeda.
Distrust of authority is my trip. Deal with it.

You are only allowed to distrust authority 50% of the time because they are just trying to scare you into controlling you. The rest of the time you must embrace it or YOU WILL SURELY DIE!

I'm not the biggest fan of the Japanese in the world, they have their problems, but I do wish we would take a hint from the things they do right. Animated pornography and violence, excellent technology, all ages comics that aren't just superheroes and are available everywher, and when people are sick, they wear masks so that they don't infect everyone else.
