There's a whole group of people out there who have this notion that they need to get rid of one or more limbs, either in part or entirely. When doctors refuse to amputate the hand, foot, or limb in question (sometimes it's an eye or an ear, sometimes something else, but legs below the knee and arms below the elbow seem to be most common) they'll go and do stupid-ass things to force the doctors' hand.
