I can't see how any beta blocker would be performance enhancing unless it was used for something like overcoming shyness for public speaking and so forth. Yeah I have personal experience with this kind of medicine but in my experience one to two months of a class that deals with these kind of situations will be much more beneficial.

One other thing for anyone wondering beta blockers do not give you any kind of buzz whatsoever. The only abuse potential is if you plan to "an hero".

People say Arhnuld did steroids but as far as I know he did growth hormone. No - they will fuck you right up. You get a boost that your body was not manufactured to handle. You are essentially overclocking your entire network - organs, chem and brain. Of course they work, and then you are fucking dead, or better yet, fucked up and dying faster than other people.

And how do you like yer rain, man? It's still fucking raining here. The whole goddamn state is flooded over this way.

its like a big long thunderstorm.

While I have been tempted by stuff like steroids and adderall in competitive environments, I am sometimes overwhelmed by a lot of the very public misconceptions about (anabolic) steroids (and, yes, you bring up non steroid performance enhancers like HGH).

Frankly we don't have the long term studies. At best, theres a growth of the left ventricle in the heart. Liver and kidney damage? At most a concern on deep cycles and when taking oral steroids.
Depression? Don't go off your cycle cold turkey.

Of course, we prescribe shit that our body wasnt made to handle all the time. Female birth control is very popular and it also affects your hypothalamus feedback loop (as steroids does - but differently).

Steroids helps people in a very real way when theyre wasting from diseases like HIV/AIDS...

I had a reaction to those that fucked me up permanently. I agree with you. Actually, after this happened to me i started talking to more women about it and found they had reactions as well. This is a cheap way to be able to tell if someone has had a bad reaction to birth control pills = look at the skin on their soft tissue exposed to the sun. Like back of the neck, face, tops of the arms. You see a mottled pattern - spots. Might look like a sunburn that didn't peel right, only it doesn't heal. It took me fucking years of using stuff with an acid base to get that crap off my face. My dad, who was a paramedic took one look at me after it happened and asked 'your on birth control pills?'. Why do you think they tell you not to take them if you smoke and are over 35? It's because they can stress the fuck out of your heart. They are dangerous. I disagree with all of it because in the long term you will in fact fuck up your processes. It's like jerking the stick on a throttle over and over again. Parts and processes experience wear that shouldn't.

and have to wonder what the average life expectancy is of a habitual steroid user. Tell you what else - vreast cancer? How many females have tit cancer in the US? One estimate is one in five. How in fuck is that possible? Women, historically, have a higher life expectancy than males, so why does one in five get tit cancer? Seems there is a direct correlation between hormone therapy and tit cancer. Gee - go figure? Know what else is considered a hormone therapy? Birth control. I bought shit for dinner, then brownies and cookies for the girlfriend and some tuna for the cats. Good times.

The first pills that the FDA approved in the 1960's had too high of a dose. they backed off later after more research.
On the other hand, so many people are on performance enhancing steroids its retarded. If people don't think this is going on in the olympics, they're fooling themselves. its too bad no one is doing research on this on all the pro and amateur athletes on it.

There's all sorts of other things you can pull to boost yourself. The growth hormone thing adds bone density, which enables you to bulk up because you can hold more meat. That's the 'if you make a suitable rack, meat will come' theory. Short term boost like blood boosting which was made illegal, but who in hell know how to detect that anymore? That's a track and field thing because it enables you to hold more oxygen in your system. The thing with the Olympics that I do believe is that these people are able to live an athletic lifestyle which 9/10ths of the population can not afford to do. So they are different to begin with.

And those little Chinese girls are little girls. I watched the bar exercise thing the other night (hence breaking my resolution to completely boycott it). The reason those little girls kept landing on their ass on the bar is that first, their bones aren't fused or set, so they can only hang a minimal amount of muscle, hence they are unable to do a strength related exercise. I mean, DUH.

it was a component early in the filmm first introducing steroids to relativity and other drugs. Vitamin C's side effects were put up, so i threw them there. The movies was funnier as the doctor went into "vaginal pain" as a side effect. Jellyfish stings are just as inane.

I like this part of that article.
Indeed, the effect of the drugs does seem magical. Beta-blockers don't merely calm musicians; they actually seem to improve their performances on a technical level. For the last two decades, the use of beta-blockers has generally met with approval from the medical establishment. "Stage fright is a very specific and time-limited type of problem," said Michael Craig Miller, the editor of the Harvard Medical Letter. Miller, who is also an amateur pianist, noted that beta-blockers are inexpensive and relatively safe, and that they affect only physical, not cognitive, anxiety. "There's very little downside except whatever number you do on yourself about taking the drugs."

But now that the drugs have established themselves as a seemingly permanent part of the classical music world, some musicians and physicians are beginning to question the acceptability, safety, efficacy and ethics of using them. One concern is that many musicians use beta-blockers without proper medical supervision. The 1987 survey of orchestra musicians revealed that 70 percent of musicians taking beta-blockers got them from friends, not physicians. Mirkin, the Philharmonic violist, first obtained Inderal from his father, who took it for angina. Others buy it while touring countries where it is sold over the counter.

"If you look at the logic of why we ban drugs in sport, the same should apply to music auditions," said Charles Yesalis, a professor at Pennsylvania State University who studies performance-enhancing drugs.

    joerandom:
