Bioshock 2. Verdict? It sucks.

Odd, the review seemed to say that it's a good game, just not as good as the original. That's a lot better than sucking, in my book. (Hell, if it was half as good as the first game, it'd be better than most games out there.)
Being linear sounds balls, so does the multiplayer, but otherwise looks pretty bonery.
Goddamn, only an 8.9 out of 10. That's like a D- or something. I only want games that are 9.7 and above. Everything else is a waste of my time.

Meh, I thought the first one sucked too. Interesting concept, nice graphics, but I just wasn't a fan.

On the xbox.com forums people were always talking about how the game was such a unique and interesting take on morality. It wasn't. It was like across between the Spy Who Loved Me and an Ayn Rand novel.
Anyway i didn't like the first and i wont be getting the second. Aliens vs Predator comes out soon, that will take care of my first person shooter needs.

I didn't like the first too much, but I think that was because I had played System Shock 2, which.. well, Bioshock just felt like a dumbed-down version of it. =/. And there wasn't NEARLY as much diversity amongst the enemies (Both in actions and looks) as there was in System Shock 2.

I figure on withholding judgement until a few months out, and eventually just picking up the game on the cheap during a steam weekend sale or something. The first one WAS good, just not as good as the hype leading up to it lead me to believe, and in truth when does the hype ever deliver in anything?
I do know that the guy behind the first one didn't have anything to do with this, so I'm apprehensive, and other than some QoL stuff, I'll be interested to see what players think of the rest of it. At $50, I'll be pissed if it sucks so no buy, at $30 (like Borderlands) my expectations will totally drop, so I'll likely pick it up then.

I didn't like Bioshock that much. It was cool and the ambiance was interesting, but it was too easy. When you died basically nothing happened.
"Bioshock 2 is a thinker's FPS, and it's stands out for this reason."

The first game was too short and far too easy.

The first one was too easy, except for the first times you meet a Daddy. I didn't find it short, but I'm kind of a search everywhere guy.

If it's half as good as the first game, then it's only one-quarter as good as System Shock.

You needed to back track at several junctures and could, if you wanted to, make use of your little sub to go up and down levels. I found myself going back in the first one a couple of times looking for Big Daddies that were wandering outside of my path.

I dunno, I'd say that Bioshock was about 75% as good as the first System Shock. It was only around 40% as good as the second, though... but SS2 was one of the rare sequels that was much better than the original game.
The 'Oh, fuck, it's SHODAN!' reveal is still probably my favorite video game moment ever.

I also loved the first game and I thought the length was appropriate. It seemed to me to be just as long as Half Life 2 if you eliminated those insufferable "drive for a hour" and defend your bases stages. The art style of Bioshock was wonderful, too.
But, I'm also the type of gamer who dislikes greatly FPS's in the Call of Duty sense of semi-true to life. I guess I like my games to be unique and interesting, not historical (or modern) war sims.

I was highly disappointed in the first that a good Free Market/Objectivist/Libertarian like Mr. Ryan was killed by the player.
If anything he should have been the protagonist!

Mass effect 2 was shit. If I hadn't paid $50 for it I wouldn't even have finished it. Combat was clunky, the RPG elements were stripped down, and the story was boring. I have no fucking clue why people flipped for it.
Maybe I'm being hard on it because it got such great reviews and turned out to be pretty mediocre.

Mass Effect 2 was incredible. The story wasn't presented as well as the first games... you pretty much knew what was going to happen after the first ten minutes, but the sub plots and the way that decisions made during ME1 were integrated into the game kept it interesting.
I'm glad the rpg elements were stripped down. There was far too much loot in the first game. Having to stop and strip things down to medi gel wasn't exactly fun. I think that the ability to use the lab to make upgrades was way more fun than any of the rpg parts from the first.

That, and it had an absolutely perfect ending, even though I could see it coming from a parsec away.

Ah, the good ol' monkeys filled with hate. I was playing SS2 with two friends via LAN when the monkeys first show up. We hear yelling and explosions coming from Marlon's speakers and look over to see him fighting some "L'il half-a-dude" as he put it. A big-ass battle ensued, and it took all three of us to spank 'em.

I bought the game of the year edition of Mass Effect because of the hype for 2 (and because it was $20 at best buy). I'm bored as hell with it after playing it for half an hour. Maybe I'll give it another go, but as far as I can see, it's just a shooter with intermittent walls of text or 10 minute conversations elucidating me on canon there's no reason to care about.

There's a special place in gaming Hell for people who play SS2 for the first time in co-op mode.

I didn't think it was the greatest computer RPG story ever (that's still SS2 or Planescape) or even of the last couple of years (Fallout wins there), but I liked the story of the first one. The second... well, it had good points, though the whole "only your crew and a very few other people believe you that X is a gigantic threat to the galaxy" thing was old by the end of the first game, and seeing it in the second again was just... dumb.

I actually think the monkeys, for me, were a really terrifying part, too. Because, initially.. I was always turned away from them when they attacked. I first just thought they were harmless ambient creatures. So I keep getting damaged with no idea WHERE the fuck it's coming from, and I finally turn around to see one of the little bastards firing of a cryokinetic blast at me. Which sort of triggered a "OH SHIT WHY CAN THE MONKEYS USE PSIONICS!?!" response.

I need to get my hands on a copy of planescape. Even if I know some of the spoilers, it sounds AMAZING.
(I mean, you help a street give birth to an alley!)
Then again, I also need to finish Balder's Gate 2.
(BUTT KICKING FOR GOODNESS!)

Planescape always seemed really cool to me in that it was the same engine used to make the original fallouts and was made, duh, by interplay. It was a neat concept, being dead and being followed around by a skull, and I played it for quite a few hours. Then somehow - it's been a long time - I ended up in this area I couldn't escape. It was like a purgatory of sorts, with a bunch of different portals, if I recall correctly. I got frustrated and quit it.
Everyone in the universe raves about SS2. I downloaded it to try and play it but I am not good with computer and, despite following internet advice, which led me to download a bunch of programs that didn't help, I had to give up.
Sad. :(

Apparently the hell is actually for those who try to complete the game in co-op. I eventually had to bow out and play the game in single player mode, while my friends got through about 80% of the game until a bug prevented them from progressing farther.

Planescape is my favorite computer RPG ever character wise, without a doubt. Probably story-wise as well, but it's hard to say - Balder's Gate 2 & System Shock 2 were both great there. (Although comparing 3rd person pure RPG to FPS/RPG cross is difficult.)
As far as challenge / combat, SS2 beats the other two. But I'll replay any of them when there's a long drought of new games worth buying.

Ha-ha, soledsoled got mazed. (The Lady of Pain, who runs the city you start in, does that to people who commit serious enough crimes. It is kind of a pain to get out of.)

I still have an old win98 boot set up on a machine for the express purpose of playing ancient games. Sometimes, it's easier to pull out the old compy & hook it up than it is to get some 90's games running on XP.

Uncharted 2 was the best game I played last year. I don't care if it's on rails.
GTA4 was very good, and Dragon Age was interesting, but I don't like that you have to have the perfect party or you can't finish the game on normal mode.

System Shock 2 > Bioshock.
Though System Shock 2 is greater than most games really.
Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed Bioshock and intend to play through the second one.

The first half an hour or so is just escaping the prison thing. Once you get your own ship and can go recruit people, it starts to get interesting. I wouldn't say that the story is the best part, but the thing I liked the best was the various loyalty missions for your crew. They were all pretty good little stories.
Overall, I think it's better than the first, even though I don't think the main story was as good.
