Look, if anybody was to complain about the conditions of the poor, it ought to be the bN libs. Yet they're the ones who scream loudest when somebody pokes a hole in the exaggerated balloon of American socialism. Despite the incessant propaganda and lies, the only people who are ever REALLY sticking up for queers, niggers, the working poor, elderly on fixed incomes, et al. are the End the Fed contingent of the national discourse. And for our efforts, we get roundly mocked.

Most people in this world will never amount to much more than Al Bundy. And - SO FUCKING WHAT. A ditchdigger with a GED should be able to support two kids and he should be able to see a doctor when he gets sick. And no matter how much the bN libs croon and holla about how fucking great our government is, that hasn't happened, and won't happen under Obama either. Al Bundy doesn't and never will have a friend in government, but there should be no obstacles to him supporting himself. Instead, the do-gooder Libs and the fascist Cons have run a century long Punch and Judy show in order to prevent him from doing so, convincing him that he has to sacrifice economic freedom and civil rights in order to protect him from poverty and terrorists. Well, fuck that. I don't buy the premises and I don't buy the conclusion. We ought to be ashamed of ourselves as a culture every time we look outside and we see all the people the Democrat-Republican Axis is failing, but instead, we just pick one team to root for because it's nothing more than the American Idol of complete fucking horseshit.

I'm genuinely curious. If you were appointed president czar tomorrow and any policies you wanted enacted would be implemented, what would America look like?

Here's your chance to show everyone how much smarter you are than them.

    2. Return to gold standard

There are others who would call such a person a leech the instant their ditch digging income proved insufficient to cover the cost of medical care that they or their family needed, however.

Legalize all drugs and let all people convicted of nonviolent drug offenses from prison. End federal funding for local police departments. End the Dept of Education, Energy, and so on. Withdraw all troops from all non-US bases. End federal enforcement of copyrights and patents. Fund the post office to full capacity. Reboot the entire legal system and force every law to be comprehensible to 80% of people who have an 8th grade education. Close the CIA, TSA, NSA, and most of the other TLAs.

It's important to remember we could spend our entire GDP on health care and people would still die of technically preventable illness. well truth be told, their complete and utter failure to recognize that they were in effect a one-horse town, and that horse was being moved to Japan did a shitload of damage. They refused to diversify their overall plan and they suffered for it. If you look at Milwaukee or Pittsburgh, they were facing very similar situations to Detroit in the 80s and early 90s, but they've both largely managed to either reverse or at least halt/slow many of those issues, and both towns have strong union presence and have been historically democrat-led since forever. There are plenty of issues at hand. Detroit is just such a sad story all together.

"I remember when I was with Special Forces--it seems a thousand centuries ago--we went into a camp to inoculate it. The children. We left the camp after we had inoculated the children for polio, and this old man came running after us, and he was crying. He couldn't see. We went there, and they had come and hacked off every inoculated arm. There they were in a pile--a pile of little arms. And I remember...I...I...I cried, I wept like some grandmother. I wanted to tear my teeth out, I didn't know what I wanted to do. And I want to remember it, I never want to forget. And then I realized--like I was shot...like I was shot with a diamond...a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought, "My God, the genius of that, the genius, the will to do that." Perfect, genuine, complete, crystalline, pure. And then I realized they could stand that--these were not monsters, these were men, trained cadres, these men who fought with their hearts, who have families, who have children, who are filled with love--that they had this strength, the strength to do that."

What many people don't understand is how much leverage the UAW had over the auto manufacturer's as 1 single day of shutdown (strike) was extremely expensive to the company. That's why the unions were able to extricate such generous above-market wages and benefits for their skill level. And all that $$ that went to pay for such an expensive workforce come right out of R&D and investment in modern plants, product quality, etc.

Of course Auto manufacturer exec's/leaders mades some bad decisions, but when you're investment and R&D budget is qetting squeezed to death you are forced to cut corners with your design and quality and investment in modern plants.

None of this is new news and was well-documented for decades. If your labor costs are substantially higher than your competitors you're eventually going to enter an unvirtuous spiral of product quality and innovation cost-cutting and lower market share as a result.

Problem is too many people only want to look at half of the picture/reality in what caused the automakers downfall. Paying some highschool grad $90 an hour to sit and turn a few knobs (with 100% pension and healthcare benefits)? Of course your R&D and investmentment in new products is going to suffer, and you company's ass is grass.

swingingjohnson: It's not so much of crappy cars. The cars were not so bad. It's because the auto makers started outsourcing everything.

The cars have been utter garbage for years, long before they started outsourcing. They were perfectly capable of manufacturing complete trash on their own.

Once the economy recovers, pull out all the federal life support. To hell with them.
