I wasn't pregnant at the time, they were trying to get a better look at some ovarian cysts. I'm just saying it's WAY more uncomfortable and invasive than your typical gyno appointment.

According to this, it's only the size of a tampon.

elton jon benet: You know who was pro-abortion? That's right Mrs C. A 93y/o woman. Seems her 4th child died at birth. She carried that child to term, and I'm sure she planned to cherish her. Yes, it was a girl. That girl baby also had spinal bifida, and a myriad of other defects. Mrs C said it was a blessing that child died. Back then, they didn't have the prenatal testing they do today. She said if she had known, she would have opted for an abortion.
If abortion becomes banned, these pregnancies will be carried to term. It's just wrong.
Thankfully all the potlicians who case so much about unborn babies will care just as much to ensure there's a good social system in plcae to provide the lifetime of care required.

Fine. There was this one time when we were drinking at a bar across the street from the local ABC affiliate. We left the bar. I was driving us in a '71 El Camino. He was in his usual button-fly jeans and leather jacket. I was wearing a dress and thigh hi stockings. We walked over to the car and kissed. He bent me back on the hood and proceeded to 'have his way' with me. The sky was beautiful that summer night.
Thankfully at the time, that TV station did not have weather cams on the roof as they do now. There would have been a youtube of an 11:00pm weatherman saying, "Let's take a look at what is happening outside now,,," with me smiling while on my back on the hood of that car.

Not counting a speculum in the expanded position, a transvaginal ultrasound wand is the biggest thing I've had up me during a medical exam. I'm pretty good at relaxing the works down there, but I could easily see it being traumatizing for some women.

quinblake: One would think the women are used to having a medical instrument inserted way far up vaginally in order to be tested on a regular basis for cervical cancers.
they do it like that because as far as I know they have no other means of doing so. There is another means of having a less obtrusive sonogram that they aren't performing.
Imagine if someone told you that in order to take your temperature, they had to shove a thermometer up your ass, and then when you said "is that really necessary?" they replied, "no, we could just take it orally but its not as if you've never had something up your ass before so what's the diff?"
Also, the women getting paps are voluntarily doing so...this is a government-mandated procedure that really doesn't have anything to do with what they are actually looking for. So to further our hypothetical, imagine after they pulled out the thermometer, they said "yup, 98.6...looks like you're qualified to work as a WalMart greeter...congratulations!"

quinblake: I'm not a proponent of this, I was just curious how it differed from a regular cervical exam.
I recently had one of those sucker shoved up me when they needed to ensure that my placenta was not blocking my cervix. When the technician pulled it out, I went, "Holy crap, that's kinky!" It was like a very large 14" long and thick dildo and I felt that someone should at least buy me dinner first. It was a bit awkward and uncomfortable, but it was necessary to ensure that I would be able to have a vaginal birth, so I did it.
Now if I were a rape victim going in to get an abortion from a pregnancy that happened because of it, the whole experience would be traumatic. If I was a woman just going in to end an unintended pregnancy, it would be unnecessarily invasive. A regular over the tummy sonogram gives the doctor all the information they need to go forward with an abortion. This whole thing just serves to try to fuck with the women who opt to pursue this medical procedure, and perhaps humiliate them.

Um, seriously? They don't shove the whole thing up there...the technician does have to hold onto the handle. It is too thick to pass through the cervical opening. What happens in these exams is the vaginal probe is inserted all the way up to the cervix and then probed around up there like a flashlight to get views from different angles. I have to say it was very uncomfortable and awkward, and I'm not a shy person. I needed this done because they were looking to make sure my cervix wasn't being blocked by my placenta, which would mean that I would definitely have to have a c-section as the baby's passage would be completely blocked, so this was the best angle for them to go about doing that. (Happily, the placenta had moved up in my uterus so my cervix was completely clear!) In the case of having an abortion, it is a completely unnecessary procedure.

Very very few clinics do this and usually only because they've been sued dramatically. A transvaginal unltrasound is the only way to hear the heartbeat of an early first trimester fetus, which is the reason, on the surface, why they want it done. Most abortions are early ones so women would not be able to hear a heartbeat otherwise.

The saddest part of your post is that you think it's hyperbole. You sound like you're still holding onto the image of government you were taught about in the 5th grade.
And I fully believe that the people who proposed and championed this bill got sexually aroused thinking about it, and are getting sexual gratification from the thought of these women being forced to submit to this procedure before the abortion.

quinblake: OK, there's a handle included in the 14". I was confused by the description of the length.
That's OK! The best description I can come up with is that it looks like a huge dildo. When she pulled it out I was like holy crap you gotta be kidding me! I got really inappropriate with her and joked around to help me relax enough so the procedure wouldn't be too painful. I told her I like her well enough, just not in THAT way...asked her if she was going to buy me dinner first....and on and on.
The point is, regardless the size of the instrument, it is unnecessary to do a vaginal sonogram prior to an abortion. They were never needed before. I could see the screen of all of my exams and I have to say I was able to see my baby much more clearly on the regular over the belly sonogram then on the vaginal probe sonogram. The technician actually did an over the belly sonogram to see how my little bean was doing after the vaginal probe to get a better look at her. So really, the only reason for these vaginal probes is to fuck with women who are looking to get an abortion. And I don't like the idea of politicians telling doctors how to do their jobs. How dare they claim to have more expertise then them. Politicians need to stay out of our bedrooms and away from private medical decisions that are between me, my doctor, and my own conscience.

Progress is being made. Drugs that used to be syringe injected can be administered sub-lingually.
Let's put it this way. How would you like a yearly medical exam that required a catheter type device inserted into the opening in your penis and threaded to your testes for the detection of cancer? Would you like that?

They did surgery prior to the invention of radiography. Then as better imaging techniques and technology evolved, they were able to do a better and safer job. So why would more information ever be seen as unnecessary?

The FREE part ends up saving money in the end, as then your taxpayers don't have to support all the extra welfare babies that are born. You should be happy about that. (Of course here is where you give your standard ridiculous response that there is no such thing as prevention)
Not to mention that the government is not forcing birth control on anyone. It's simply there if you need it. Besides, when did the federal government start giving away free birth control?

Actually it's not. Or at least not as much as it will cost to support all the unwanted children.
Although I don't really see why it needs to be free. The copay on the pill is pretty low with most insurance companies.
Some are pretty unreasonable though. I was used to a $5 or $10 copay for birth control, but one insurance company I had for a while wanted a $60 copay for depo. Which you can buy OTC in Mexico for around $20 or less.

If doctors felt that doing a transvaginal ultrasound was necessary for every abortion, the AMA would make it protocol. Politicians do not have the expertise in medicine required to determine what medical protocols doctors should follow. Should politicians tell doctors how to do open heart surgery as well? Should politicians be allowed to decree that every birth should be done by C-section? Should the state tell you how to extract a tooth?
As I said before, I've had both the regular over the tummy sonogram and the transvaginal ultrasound done on me very recently...I'm due in three weeks. In every case I was allowed to see what was going on on the screen. I was able to see my baby much more clearly and from a wider varity of angles with the over the tummy scan than the vaginal scan. Anyhoo, until the AMA comes around saying that the vaginal probe is a necessary tool for safe/successful abortions, I'm going to stand firmly against a practice that seems to be motivated only by politics and nosy busy-bodies who have no business getting involved in the doctor/patient relationship.
