Big Bang Theory - black-face for geeks
I've never actually watched The Big Bang Theory. Is it worth it?
You guys are jerks.

I've never watched it either. Apparently it's hilarious if you're not actually a nerd.

It's for hipsters who think they are geeks because they wear black framed glasses ironically, know how to use Google, and were once bumped into by a jock.

It's definitely one of those shows where you have to suffer through a couple of episodes before you click with it. I remember the first few times watching and I was like "What the fuck is this shit? It's like a 30 minute Dennis Miller astrophysics joke." When it started coming on TBS, I forced myself to watch it one night out of boredom. I made it through two episodes without cracking a smile, but then there was an episode where Sheldon modifies Penny's behavior using chocolate candies as positive re-enforcement. I gave in and let go of my smug sense of superiority, and the following weekend downloaded episodes 1-current.

I'm trying to ensure TV gets that option, or gets rid of the laugh track, by never watching any show with a laugh track.

I'm finally getting around to watching The Wire. I've only seen the first episode of the first season so far and while it's clearly very well written and acted, I'm not really sure if police drama is my genre. Going to watch a few more episodes though because everyone says it's so amazing.

It's a half-hour of low-hanging fruit at the expense of the group who are already the butt of most of the jokes on TV. I'm not sure how pointing that out is ranting, but you may have a different definition than I do.

it's not even close to a standard law'n'order police drama. The show isn't even about the cops. It's about the whole city. That becomes more apparent in season 2.

I hate laugh tracks with a passion. It almost always signifies a show that isn't just not funny, but painfully unfunny, like a person who drinks merlot daily and insults people.
kswheels: The MASH DVDs allow you to turn the laugh track off. TV should have this option.
Disagree. Big Bang Theory actually films in front of a studio audience. This means the writing, and even the actor timing of jokes, is based on audience reaction. If you just take that away it's much more awkward.

It's one of the few shows that actually makes me laugh instead of groan and facepalm. My daughter absolutely adores it. I'd also like to say that my glasses are real, my google-fu is strong, and I was bullied mercilessly, so my nerd-cred is irrefutable. :P

Yes, but the actors will pause and respond to that. It's a bit of a give-and-take, and if you remove a part of that, there will be more awkward pauses.
I understand being against laughter included with the show, but I don't think disabling it on the DVD will make it better.

Here's the joke, by the way:
A farmer noticed that his chickens were sick, and called in a biologist, a chemist, and a physicist to help diagnose the problem. The biologist observed the chickens, concluding, "I can tell you there's something wrong with your chickens, but I don't know what's causing it." The chemist took fluid samples from the chickens back to his lab, and returned saying, "I can tell you what's infecting your chickens, but I don't know how they got it." Meanwhile, the physicist had been sitting on the floor, scribbling maddly on several notebooks worth of paper. Suddenly, he jumped up, exclaiming, "I have the answer, but it only works for spherical chickens in a vaccuum."

It was more...One kid was a powder keg, the other was a follower. I forget which was which, but one of the boys was going to go off. Bullying had nothing to do with it.
was in more nefarious that that?

bake: last i heard it was "kids bullied, went off the edge"
By most accounts, they weren't especially bullied - indeed, the consensus seems to be that they bullied at least as much as they were bullied. Y'know, kinda like in most high-schools, or high-school-like environments like bN, the people who go psycho and blame it on being bullied typically are amongst the biggest bulliers.

someone who may or may not be just replyin': i hate shitty comedy that relies on canned laughter.
enjoy your nerd-cred.
Good for you, then. The show is taped live, so it's not exactly a laugh track, but whatever. I have no idea why you feel the need to do this anon. I don't really care what you like or don't. I just found it stupid that you bothered to use up anonymous comments to hate on a television show.

That's certainly one valid answer. Another one has been derping things up all do, despite leaving the site a couple weeks ago.

Killing our dish service was such a good idea. It was like quitting smoking: a few days of withdrawal, then sweet freedom. Torrents and netflix are so blissfully devoid of commercials and loud station bumpers.
Having not sat down and watched TV for about 15 years I don't think I'd survive watching all that crap. It's not the shows that would kill me, it's the advertising.

I hate the lame-ass ads too, especially the poorly done local ones. That's one reason why I only watch 2 shows on regular TV, otherwise it's PBS. Well, that, and most of the shows I have tried to watch are apparently written by/for morons.

I didn't own a TV until about 10 years ago, and then I was FORCED to buy one because my then-GF of sorts constantly nagged me about it. (In a NYC accent): "Why don't you own a TV? What's WRONG with you." etc. etc. Fine, I went and bought a fucking TV, a giant monstrosity. Of course, that meant I had to get a VCR and DVD player.
Turned out to be A Good Deal: she could watch Judge Judy or whatever, and get off my back while I was doing something else, (like playing Unreal Tournament or making GIS coverages) until sextime came around.
I still have that TV, but now people are nagging me: "Why do you have that old thing? The new flatscreens are eco-friendly! They pick up more channels" etc. etc. More channels of shit? I'll pass.

I haven't seen it but if my co-workers are any kind of a measurement I'll probably pass, the president of the company and the admin assistant watch it but all the programmers think it's stupid.

Court shows are my guilty pleasure. It's a throwback to when I was a stay-at-home mom. I couldn't stomach the talk shows or soap operas, so I'd watch court shows while I ironed and folded clothes.

kswheels: The MASH DVDs allow you to turn the laugh track off. TV should have this option.
There is also a brightness control on the TV, but that doesn't work either...
