Look up Hearst way back in the 30s to see why 70+ years later we still can't toke up. Hint: it wasn't law enforcement but the paper industry.

A lot more to it than Hearst and is pine forests for paper. It was mostly about a way to bring forced labor back to the south via the prison system. It was an easy and warped legal method to entrap black people and Mexicans in to the slave labor system.

Well that makes sense. A rich man like Hearst must have some inherent superiority that allowed him to become so rich. It follows that he knows what is best for us.

This fits nicely with the whole "we'll buy and privatize your prison if you can guarantee a 90% occupancy rate" thing.

Also a healthy dose of racial discrimination.

Thought the same thing when I saw this. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the private prison companies were funneling money to this group of lobbyist.

Like I said, it wasn't law enforcement that started it, but the whole corrections industry realized pretty quickly that marijuana was a cash cow that would never go away.

Cops - need money for a Bearcat Negotiator complete with machine gun ports? Just cite the need to stop drug users!

Lawyers - need money? Just keep mary jane illegal and you'll have more criminal defendants than you know what to do with!

Prisons - need money? Just cite how many repeat drug offenders there are!

A lot of people are employed just by those three industries.

The medical establishment sure as hell doesn't want it legalized.

Doctors - look at all the money they get from having people come in with minor complaints that could be solved with a joint.

Pharma - you think they want something legalized that anyone can grow, even potheads? Hell no! Let's have expensive medications instead that require a prescription and insurance companies!

Insurance companies - you want those headaches to go away right? Just sign this form and pay a large premium every month. Pay no heed to the weed behind the curtain.
