There's no world, either. It's just an epiphenomenon of brain chemistry.

If you regularly commit adultery and ask Jesus for forgiveness, you can go to Heaven.

If you regularly commit sodomy and ask Jesus for forgiveness ????

I mean that these people are modern day Pharisees goes without saying. But what's more amazing is they can't even hammer out an internally consistent theology. It's like they just blurt out whatever the first and most self-righteous thing that comes to mind is without any regard for their scriptures or even what they said two minutes ago

    His grandaddy was a preacher!

    His daddy was a preacher!

    He was a preacher!

and then he pulled the curtain aside in that documentary and showed what was really going on, and all the "faithful flock" said Satan done got a hol' o' him!!

(and there was much wailing and lamentation)

"The profession of shaman has many advantages. It offers high status with a safe livelihood free of work in the dreary, sweaty sense. In most societies it offers legal privileges and immunities not granted to other men.

But it is hard to see how a man who has been given a mandate from on High to spread tidings of joy to all mankind can be seriously interested in taking up a collection to pay his salary; it causes one to suspect that the shaman is on the moral level of any other con man.

But it is a lovely work if you can stomach it."

Well, a shaman has little enough to do with modern preaching. For one thing, hallucinogens are basically intrinsic to shamanism and many scholars like McKenna and Hancock won't even acknowledge someone as a shaman without it. Furthermore, shamans generally aren't considered the paragons of their communities... instead, they're more like morticians or septic tank cleaners. You're glad they're there, but you wouldn't necessarily want them over for dinner...

Heinlein was using the term "shaman" to describe any person who uses magic, or at least the rumor of magic to provide easy living for themselves, enhanced social status, and gain a greater opportunity to ignore those rules others in their society are expected to follow.

Many shamans ignore those rules in ways that I wouldn't categorize as desirable.

Understand, it's been almost 40 years since I saw it. At that time, I thought it was pretty good about exposing what a racket it was.

Ater nearly 40 years, you can again find it, this time in DVD

You'll probably have to order it, though

I chuckled at the idea that judeochristians turn out to be right on the afterlife only to find out that it was ruled by sacred hindu cows.
