I'm thinking this is more "crazy" and less "evil".

Sure you do, but it's normally about the outrage and morality of the babies eating them.
I bet she dropped the kid, most likely accidentally, and it was knocked unconscious while bleeding from the ears, and she just decided, well, I'm bad, might as well finish it off.. and it just snowballed from there eventually making her think she had to prove she was crazy to get out of the media circus that would follow her bad parenting, leading to the gruesome exclusion of her offing herself to save herself from the satan she tried to explain to herself that she was saving her child from.

I just read an article on ancient infanticide. Mothers in ancient Greece would leave their newborns in a jar outside to perish if they were unwanted.
