To say that "cotton to" has no racial overtones at all now, is just as incorrect on your part. Sure you are proud it was coined in the 16th century, but over the years it has taken on a bit of the flavor.

Regardless, it seems a term civilized people (and politicians) might want to stay away from. I thought this was fascinating from the Wikipedia link:

"Several United States politicians—including presidential candidates John McCain, John Kerry, Michele Bachmann, and Mitt Romney—have been criticized by civil rights leaders, the media, and fellow politicians for using the "tar baby" metaphor"

    Failed presidential candidates, all.

It was a long time ago on some other site. I don't recall exactly what I said, but it was as innocuous as what you had said. Probably someone had seen the phrase "black folks" used in a dismissive way and decided to extend that to the word "folks" all by itself.

My point is that there IS manufactured outrage. Sure, the world of racial, sexist, and other slurs is very dynamic, with new slurs being born. I bet if some ass started using "attractive and successful African-American" in a derogatory context, it might become a new slur. But we shouldn't allow words to become "wrong" because someone misunderstands them and thinks someone else might be offended. That's what people are complaining about when complaining about political correctness.

"Tar baby" is a great example. If you read the story, it doesn't have anything to do with race. It's not a baby at all. Yet somehow the term is suspect. Why not anything to do with dark colors? If there are electricity problems, is it racist to say blackout or brownout?

On the other hand, the gay community has managed to take back the word "queer."

I recall Pat Buchanan on MSNBC talking about how "black folks" are very good at running and sports, which caused a small broo-ha-ha a few years ago. Of course, Buchanan is well-known for edging over the line of what is acceptable and what is not.

And I guess I'm just too busy to worry about what is "manufactured" outrage and what isn't. But like I said, if there are words or phrases that some folks find demeaning, I won't use them. "Midget" was a once acceptable term, but now they prefer "little people." Why should I care what they want to be called?

In terms of minority communities "taking back words" such as queer (and blacks with the "N" word) I confess I do have a problem with that. There are no words that should be acceptable to some, but not to others. I find blacks and gays who use those terms as low-rent as whites and heterosexuals who do.

    finnley wren: http://www.mythfolklore.net/3043mythfolklore/reading/remus/images/1950tarbaby.htm

Your linked page states: "The question is often asked 'is the Tar Baby a racist stereotype?' - but rather than asking the question that way, let's ask instead: 'can the Tar Baby be a racist stereotype?'"

Translation: Is it possible to manufacture outrage from this? Yes, certainly.

It also has a picture of a painted (concrete?) statue clothed black kid eating a hunk of watermelon. Yes, that statue seems exactly like an offensive racial stereotype. It has nothing to do with the tar baby in the story, which was tar, not human, did not have clothes, and did not eat watermelon. My guess is that some stupid shit made the racist statue and then tried to give it credibility or respectability by trying to associate it with the tar baby story.

Bush may have been an idiot (and he was) but he was a good politician. Bush knew how to connect to his audience and make them want to vote for him. Mitt Romney is absolutely terrible at running for president.

I mean, I just don't get it. It's like if I was a terrible, rotten human being who withheld flowers from a dying woman because I was too lazy to get around to spending other people's money I wouldn't lecture people about buying flowers for a dying woman, know what I mean? No one can lack that much self-awareness, right?

See... its statements like this make expose you for the moron you truly are.

RMoney sure seems to be a good campaigner. He is running against an incumbent, something Obama never did. He is running against a sycophantic press while doing well.

He has more leadership and management experience in the shit he takes than Obama will ever have. He also has a proven record as a problem solver in both the private and public sectors, something Obama never had.

I doubt RMoney could ever be as bad a President as Obama is.
