What's funny is that things have been doom and gloom for 30 years in America's inner cities. Ravaged by poverty and disproportionate law enforcement, unable to build businesses or get an education, with no hope and no plan for the future and a malaise of indifference and violence sweeping their communities... all I'm saying is, "You're next, honky."

This is what America looks like for millions and millions of people, whole generations of people on the school to prison assembly line, mostly for non-violent drug crime. Parts of America may as well be Mexico City or Kolkatta, it's just you pass those exits on the freeways without getting off. But now the rot is spreading, and now it's gonna be white people and middle class people and suburbs that discover what it's been like for decades.
Hell, my parents' subdivision has had a recent spate of home invasions. They're located right off a golf course in suburban San Diego; rich country for rich richies. And half a dozen homes have been brazenly entered during daylight hours and valuables carted off.
czarangelus:
You sound so sheltered and white czar.
I traversed the real-world neighborhoods depicted in The Wire starting around age 11, until I moved out of the city at 19. Sure, there's injustice and sure, we should endeavor to fix it, bit consider me unafraid. I'm sorry you grew up in a well-off vacuum of whiteness and are afraid of America's urban population. I am not. For the most part, they're all good honest people. Cities are the most densely populated impoverished areas in the country, so naturally, they produce the most horror stories. And people like you who have never spent time in the neighborhoods you're so frightened of have literally no idea what you're talking about.

You're all fucking right. Why didn't I see this before? Things only ever get better, and things have never before been better than they are today. Preparing for an uncertain future is a sucker's game; I should go buy a jet ski on credit at 19.99% APR, because everything is under control and my raises will always keep up with inflation, as they have my entire adult life.
Solving a debt crisis with more debt is obvious, indeed, only answer. It's a brilliant plan hatched by Nobel prize winning geniuses, and it will succeed admirably if we just give them a little more time.

SVR said that would happen, as did TBS. I played it a little more conservatively and have no regrets from doing so. Sure, I could have afforded more silver now than I could have last year at $38. But that's irrelevant to me. I believe that the window of collapse will be much shorter than other members of this community apparently believe, and I'd rather have some silver in hand at any price than take the risk that Europe and the USA sink in absolute tandem in the age of lightspeed trading.

Here's the deal though czar. You're a bright fellow. That's good.
The problem is you don't quite yet realize what it's like being a bright fellow surrounded by a sea of self-convinced morons. That's bad.
They will never stop being morons. Ever. They will never learn. While some undoubtedly wish to, they cannot. Most, of course, refuse utterly, as it impossible to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it. They will never stop stuffing leaves into their shirts and congratulating themselves on monetary expansion.
And if something goes wrong they will complain that they didn't stuff hard enough. US dollars are the leaves in fashion for going on a century now, and it will take a lot more insanity than a Euro failure to change that.
That this will happen, of course, is inevitable, but markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent.
What you need to do rather than shout at the insanity is ride it like the tides of an ocean. You're smart enough to do so. Someday the Earth will be enveloped by the sun. Someday the last star will wink out of a dark and dead sky.
And someday the last US dollar will be mounted in a framed collection in a museum hundreds of light years from here.
If we're lucky.
None of those things need matter to you. And indeed shouldn't.
Just ride it out and be prepared by being prepared to be prepared rather than standing starkly alert at every moment. That's no fun and no way to live life. Especially for someone smart.

Actually if we hadn't had any of the unnecessary protracted wars after World War II*, we would probably be sitting pretty with a retirement age of 58 - 60 with money left over to actually 'trickle down' on the less well off and keep them from sleeping under I-95.

Yeah, that's why I used a more realistic hypothetical 'Golden Age' retirement of 58-60, instead of 50. As it stands in the current 'Corn Turd Age', we probably need a retirement age of 68, hope that most people making $50k or less a year die around that time, and some kind of (probably mandatory) forfeiture of benefits for people who don't 'need' them.

Lol.
I'm not even rich per se, I'd say upper middle class, and I don't even expect those benefits to exist in 35 years, which is probably around when I'll die anyway given family history.
But I really don't think there are that many people that are A) lower class living into their 80's or B) middle-middle and upper-middle class retirees that actually need their paltry SS payments (sure, they're 'fixed income', but they can cut back their trips to Atlantic City to once every 6 months). Granted, I'm basing this on personal observation, but I've gotten a lot of personal observation over the years, so I'm not just saying something I wish to be true. I suppose I should look into the facts more there as opposed basing shit on anecdotes, though.
But you're right, there's no political will among the old conservative base to do what's right to balance the budget at their perceived 'expense'. (And I say 'conservative' because you'd have to pry those frivolous checks for the old conservative Democrat's dead, liver-spot-covered hands as well).

It's amazing that Germans realize they should work to 67 before retirement while Greeks can't imagine working beyond their mid-50's. Yet the Greeks demand bail-out money from the Germans. And some people are confused by the math.
Welcome to bN libby-libville.

This must be in my SCHPREISSENGATEN!! genes. The notion of a fixed retirement age makes no sense to me. I couldn't just sit around being recreational most of the time. As long as my physical condition affords me the ability to be productive in some way, I probably will at least attempt to be.

Only on bN would it be questioned that people of one nation should retire at full benefits at age 50 while they demand that people of another nation work until they're 67 to pay for the former's generous retirement benefits.
libs keep banning me: Actually the primary way we are difference from Greece is that our citizens generally pay their goddam taxes.
Indeed. But we're getting close to Greece in how the rich can skirt the taxes and the poorer folks keep getting their rates jacked up to cover the shortfall.

Plenty of blame to go around in Greece. The Euro will be stronger for them and Spain having gotten the boot.

Yes, once the bank contagion to Spain and Italy ceases, the Euro will be stronger for kicking out Greece-tard. A country full of whiny entitled slackers that makes the libby-libs on bN look like Ron Paul in a bad mood.

Weak financials, lack of confidence in new debt they issue. It's come to the end of the road for socialist regimes who have been living off of fantasy and imaginary financials.
