I hardly think that this is exclusive to 'geek' culture. The same dichotomy of image exists in bog-standard advertising, most movies, mass-market book covers...

If you want to change that paradigm, feel free--by doing it differently yourself and setting an example, rather than whinging on a blog about it.

I do wish they wouldportray female characters with more..no less sexuality. That cant be their only appeal to make a great character. Make a woman a badass first, the sexiness will usually follow.

I have never had trouble with nerds who are also assholes. This issue hasn't troubled me much. That is good for me, but helps no one else. The burden of ending sexism in nerd culture remains on the males.

Not that simple. Society trains women to appease, to avoid conflict. Some of us deny that bullshit, but that's putting the burden on women. It shouldn't be on us to defy the bullshit. It should be on them to not profer the bullshit to begin with.

I didn't really change at all. I was speaking from the viewpoint of women from the start, to another woman.

How is the subject of education germane?

I know that this is covered in that little bingo card thing, but i do find it unfortunate that he can't look past the way some female characters are dressed.

I'm not into comic books at all (aside from a few mangas) but in video games, it's important to give the major characters a distinct visual identity, and often with the "over-sexualised" female characters, if you really look at them you'll find that their outfits say a lot more than "i was designed to make male players happy". Like Mass Effect's Miranda.



Yeah, it's an almost skintight catsuit-like thing. But just by looking at it you get a glimpse into her characterisation. It's obviously a very flattering ensemble and accentuates her physical assets. In an early conversation with Commander Shepard, she tells him "everything about me was designed to give me an edge... even my looks". One of the possible retorts is to call her cocky... which she is, and is expressed in her outfit. Later on in the game, she volunteers herself for several key roles during the suicide mission - one of which she's actually not very well suited to.

I also find the hexagonal pattern to give it a very clinical vibe.. which again fits in with her personality. Her willingness to execute her best friend to attain her goal demonstrates that. And cut of shoulder sections give the outfit a very official look, which fits her position of authority within Cerberus and aboard the Normandy.

These people seem to write off the fact that male characters are also sexualised in their own way, and i get the impression they do so because they understand that the way they look actually says a lot about them... and are under the misimpression that female characters are just sexxed up for the sake of it, and at the expense of being a visual depiction of their characterisaton.

It is sometimes the case, like in Soul Calibur, but i think that in a lot of the better, story-driven games, women are given fair treatment a lot of the time.

I dunno. I like to do sexy cosplay, but slave Leia's get on my nerves. To me, it's a cop-out and sign the woman isn't really a geek. She's there for her boyfriend or just some male attention. A geek girl would know to go as say... Barbarella, with the armor and stuff. Totally geeky, but also hot and showing at least a deeper knowledge of geek culture.

The male characters are sexy, a lot of 'em. But when I dress up, I try to find something that's not ridiculous, and celebrate that by doing it well, and sexy as I'm able without looking foolish.

Depends on which particular sub-'geek' you're looking at.

Dynasty Warriors offers quite a few cosplay options that are fairly fun, from what I've seen--and, should you be of an inclination to put a group together, there's more'n enough options to fill it out.
